I’ve always tried to be the kind of parent who keeps up with the times — the type who offers privacy instead of hovering over every breath a teenager takes. My daughter is fourteen, standing at that fragile border where childhood fades and the real world begins to sharpen its edges.
Her boyfriend is fourteen too — polite, soft-spoken, the kind of kid every parent quietly hopes their child brings home. Still, good manners don’t stop your pulse from jumping when two teenagers disappear behind a closed bedroom door for nearly an hour.
The house was silent. Too silent.
No footsteps, no whispers, nothing. Just that heavy quiet that lets a parent’s imagination sprint ahead of reason.
Eventually I walked down the hallway and tapped lightly on her door. No answer.
I pushed it open just enough to peek inside — and what I saw made me let out a breath so hard it turned into a half-laugh.....
