Ethan Vance had broken her arm three days earlier. By Friday evening, his mother, Victoria, and sister, Natalie, were toasting the incident over roast beef, treating it as proof she had finally “learned her place.”
Every movement sent sharp pain shooting from her wrist to her shoulder, making it impossible to eat. While her untouched dinner grew cold, Ethan calmly sliced into his steak beside her, acting as if nothing had happened.

Victoria lifted her wineglass with obvious satisfaction. “My son taught her a lesson,” she declared. Natalie laughed before raising her own glass. “She really thought she was the one in charge.“

For the first time that evening, uncertainty crossed Ethan’s face. Victoria hurried toward the foyer. “What is all this?“
