Every family gathering reinforced this narrative. Her father, Harold Ashford, proudly showcased Josephine’s accomplishments, while Cecily was barely acknowledged. When Josephine earned her Harvard scholarship, the dining room erupted in applause. Harold announced, “My eldest daughter will take this family to even greater heights.” Then, with a dismissive glance at Cecily, he added, “Well, Cecily is also here.”

The only person who ever defended her was her grandmother, Genevieve Ashford. While others focused on Cecily’s struggles, Genevieve saw her potential. “Cecily, you read more slowly than most people, but you notice things everyone else overlooks,” she often said. “Never confuse being different with being less.”

The Turning Point at Josephine’s Graduation

The night of Josephine’s Harvard Law graduation was no different.
