Whenever her name appeared on his phone, everything about him changed instantly. His posture straightened. His tone softened. He became someone carefully performing approval, as if waiting for instructions rather than living his own life.

For six years, our marriage functioned under one fragile arrangement: distance.

Two hours of highway separated us from Lorraine, and that distance was the only reason our relationship survived. Geography acted as a quiet boundary Jake was never emotionally strong enough to enforce himself.

“Stay in the garage,” he said, avoiding my eyes.

At first, I thought I misheard him. But he repeated it again, as if it were the most reasonable solution in the world. His mother would take the bedroom. The house would remain comfortable for her. And I would adjust.
