I always knew my husband, Jake, had a difficult relationship with his mother. But “difficult” doesn’t fully describe it. It wasn’t just closeness — it was dependence. Emotional, constant, and deeply ingrained.

Lorraine wasn’t just part of his life. She was the center of it.

Whenever her name appeared on his phone, everything about him changed instantly. His posture straightened. His tone softened. He became someone carefully performing approval, as if waiting for instructions rather than living his own life.

For six years, our marriage functioned under one fragile arrangement: distance.

Two hours of highway separated us from Lorraine, and that distance was the only reason our relationship survived. Geography acted as a quiet boundary Jake was never emotionally strong enough to enforce himself.

But boundaries don’t last forever.

One evening, everything shifted when Jake told me that his mother needed to stay with us for an extended period. Not visit — stay. And not in the guest room, not even inside the house as a temporary arrangement.

His decision was immediate and non-negotiable.

“Stay in the garage,” he said, avoiding my eyes.....
