“She was a baby,” she said defensively. “She wouldn’t have remembered any of it.”
Natalie stared at her.
“That doesn’t make it yours to decide.”
Diane had changed Natalie’s middle name and eventually her last name. She moved frequently, making it increasingly difficult for anyone to trace the child’s whereabouts. By the time Thomas returned and began searching for his niece, Diane had already constructed a story designed to end the investigation.
She claimed the baby had become seriously ill and died.
To support the lie, she produced a forged death certificate.
For more than three decades, Thomas believed his niece was dead.
Meanwhile, Natalie grew up believing Diane was her biological mother and that the life she knew was the only life she had ever been meant to have.
“You kidnapped me,” Natalie whispered.
Diane’s face tightened.
“I raised you.”
“You kidnapped me.”
“I gave you a family.”
“You stole mine.”
Diane’s voice rose.
“I saved you!”
Thomas remained composed, but his expression was severe.
“Saved her from what? Her parents? Her uncle?”
Diane did not answer.
The truth was that she had no legitimate reason to take Natalie away from her family. She had made a decision, concealed it for decades, and built her identity as Natalie’s mother on a foundation of deception.
But the kidnapping was only one part of what investigators were uncovering.
The Inheritance Diane Tried to Control
Natalie’s biological parents had left behind insurance proceeds, investments, property interests, and a trust intended to provide for their daughter’s future.
The trust had been structured to protect the money until Natalie reached specific milestones. That arrangement made it more difficult for Diane to withdraw everything immediately, even after she had taken control of the child.
When Natalie turned 16, Diane discovered the full extent of the assets.
According to the records Thomas had obtained, the financial misconduct began with relatively small withdrawals. Over time, the amounts increased.
Money intended for Natalie’s education, housing, and future was used to cover household expenses, Brielle’s private-school tuition, family vacations, and Diane’s mortgage.
When the trust’s security requirements became more restrictive, Diane allegedly began using Natalie’s personal information to open credit accounts and obtain additional financing.
The fraudulent activity continued for years.
The proposed birthday celebration had not created the problem. It had exposed a scheme that had been operating for much of Natalie’s life.
Brielle sank into a chair.
“You told me Dad left that money,” she said, looking at Diane.
Diane ignored her.
“You told me Natalie got more because Grandma liked her better.”
For the first time, Brielle seemed to understand that the story she had accepted about her family’s finances might have been a lie.
She had believed that her mother was entitled to the money and that Natalie had simply been expected to contribute.
Now she was learning that some of the money might never have belonged to them at all.
Natalie turned toward her sister.
“Did you know about the fraudulent accounts?”
Brielle shook her head quickly.
“Not all of it. Mom said the accounts were family accounts. She told me your name was on them because you handled the business stuff.”
“Did you know about the attempted transfer this morning?”
Brielle looked down.
Natalie waited.
“Did you try to transfer the $27,000?”
“I thought you agreed to pay it.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Brielle’s eyes filled with tears.
“I thought you had changed your mind. Mom said you were going to give me the money.”
“And that made it acceptable to come into my hospital room and demand my credit card?”
“No.”
“You grabbed my arm. You frightened my baby. You watched Mom reach for her.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Brielle covered her face.
“I thought you were always going to help me. I thought that’s what you did.”
Natalie felt an ache that had little to do with her surgical incision.
Her sister had grown accustomed to being rescued. Natalie had grown accustomed to being the person expected to do the rescuing.
Neither had questioned the arrangement deeply enough.
But that did not make their actions equal.
Brielle had participated in a confrontation that frightened a recovering mother and endangered the sense of safety she was trying to establish for her newborn. Whether she had understood the full financial scheme was a separate question that investigators would have to answer.
Natalie would not excuse what happened simply because Brielle was finally frightened by the consequences.
Diane Is Taken Into Custody
The police officer stepped toward Diane and began explaining that she was being detained in connection with the allegations under investigation.
Diane’s expression changed immediately.
For the first time since entering the hospital room, she appeared to understand that she might not be able to control what happened next.
Natalie watched as the woman who had packed her school lunches, attended her graduation, and stood beside her at her wedding placed her hands behind her back.
She expected to feel triumphant.
Instead, she felt as though she had become an orphan for a second time.
The woman who had raised her was still alive, but the history they had shared now looked different. Memories that had once seemed ordinary were suddenly surrounded by questions.
Had Diane loved her?
Had she ever regretted what she had done?
Had any part of Natalie’s childhood been free from the consequences of a lie?
As the officers prepared to escort Diane from the room, her mother turned back.
“Natalie.”
Natalie could barely bring herself to look at her.
“I did love you,” Diane said.
Natalie’s throat tightened.
“You don’t get to use that word right now.”
Diane was escorted into the hallway.
Brielle remained behind, sitting silently in the visitor’s chair.
After several minutes, she looked toward Clara.
This time, there was no visible jealousy in her expression. Only shame.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Natalie said nothing.
“I know that doesn’t fix anything.”
“No,” Natalie replied. “It doesn’t.”
Brielle began trying to explain herself, but Natalie interrupted.
“For once in your life, don’t explain why you did something. Just live with the fact that you did it.”
Brielle nodded through her tears.
Then she left.
Thomas remained in the room.
For several minutes, neither he nor Natalie knew what to say. Their relationship had begun with a revelation neither had expected, and the circumstances surrounding their meeting were almost impossible to comprehend.
Finally, Thomas reached into his wallet and removed a faded photograph.
It showed a young woman standing beside a lake.....
