Rain lashed against the windshield as Eleanor Whitmore curled into the passenger seat, her arm wrapped around her stomach. The dashboard clock glowed 1:17 a.m., illuminating the Tennessee highway stretching into darkness. Beyond the windows, lightning flickered like a cruel reminder of the life she was about to lose.
“Garrett,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the storm. “Please. The hospital is the other way.”
He never looked at her. His hands remained locked on the steering wheel, knuckles pale beneath the dashboard lights. His wedding ring caught each flash of lightning—a symbol of promises already broken.
“I can’t do this anymore.”
Eleanor struggled to understand through waves of pain. “Do what?”
“You.”
For three years, she had defended Garrett Whitmore, excusing his coldness as exhaustion, fear, and overwhelm. She told herself he was just tired of her illness—of the appointments, the bills, the crying. That night, however, there was no tenderness left. Only resentment.

His hands trembled as he released the latch. He dragged her onto the rain-soaked roadside, where her bare feet struck mud and gravel. She collapsed onto one knee, looking up at the man she no longer recognized.
“You’re going to kill me.”
Water streamed down Garrett’s face as he answered without hesitation. “You were already dying. I’m just done dying beside you.”
He climbed back into the car. The tires spun through the mud. The taillights disappeared into the storm.
