Why People Are Putting Balloons Over Shower Drains — Genius Trick!

Many people clean their bathrooms regularly yet still wonder how cockroaches manage to appear—especially in the shower. These pests love warm, humid spaces, and bathroom drains give them exactly that. What most don’t realize is that a simple party balloon can act as a small but effective barrier to help keep insects from crawling up through the plumbing. It may sound strange, but it has become a popular, low-cost trick for preventing unwanted visitors.

Cockroaches often travel through pipes and squeeze through tiny openings, especially in damp drains. By turning a balloon into a flexible seal, you can shrink the size of that opening while still letting water pass through. The method is easy: remove your shower drain cover, cut the ends off a regular balloon to create a stretchy tube, and wrap it tightly around the drain cover. Once you place the cover back, the balloon forms a narrower, protective passage that makes it harder for pests to get in.

This balloon trick works best when paired with other simple habits. Keeping the bathroom as dry as possible, wiping down surfaces after showers, and cleaning around the drain regularly all help reduce the moisture that attracts insects. Small daily steps can make a big difference.

It’s also helpful to inspect for gaps around pipes, tiles, or walls and seal them if needed — even the smallest openings can become access points. When combined with basic maintenance, the balloon method can noticeably reduce bathroom pests and help keep your shower cleaner, fresher, and far more comfortable.
