On my daughter Emma’s eighth birthday, I wanted nothing more than a simple, joyful day. The kitchen brimmed with balloons, heart-shaped pancakes, and her laughter as she wore a paper crown like a tiny queen. My parents arrived with polished smiles and a carefully wrapped gift: a pink tulle dress sprinkled with sequins. Emma’s eyes lit up as she hugged it to her chest.
But her excitement suddenly faltered. “Mom,” she whispered, pressing her fingers into the lining, “what’s this?” My heart skipped. I took the dress gently from her.
Turning it inside out, I noticed the stitching had been reopened and sewn back unusually neatly. Beneath the lining lay a small, firm object wrapped in plastic, hidden where no one would think to look. I swallowed the cold realization, forcing calm as I smiled and thanked my parents. The party continued—candles were blown out, laughter filled the room—but my mind was fixed on the hidden item.....
