By thirty-two, Daniel believed he had learned how to read people fairly well. After years of relationships that slowly faded into disappointment, his life had settled into a predictable rhythm of work, home, and quiet evenings that rarely changed.

His sister Erin finally pushed him to try dating again.

“You’re disappearing,” she told him one night while sliding his phone across the kitchen table. “At least give it a chance.”

Reluctantly, he downloaded a dating app. At first, it felt superficial and awkward. Endless profiles. Forced conversations. Small talk that went nowhere. Then he matched with Chloe.

Unlike many others, Chloe stood out immediately. She was confident, direct, and carried herself with an energy that made every conversation feel intense in a good way. Their messages quickly became longer and more personal. She challenged him instead of simply agreeing with everything he said.

After several days of talking, Chloe suggested meeting in person.
