Remembering a 28-Year-Old Taken Too Soon After Severe Lung Illness

A young man from New South Wales has tragically passed away just days before his 29th birthday after a rare bacterial infection severely damaged his lungs. Dylan Watts, 28, from Broulee near Bateman’s Bay, died on March 22. Although his family knew his condition was worsening, his passing came as a heartbreaking shock. Doctors had long warned he might not live beyond 30 due to the severity of his illness. By mid-2024, the infection had created 72 holes in his lungs, leaving him reliant on heavy medication and frequent hospital care.

His younger sister, Caitlyn, said the disease progressed rapidly. In 2021, doctors had found only two holes in his lungs, but his health steadily declined over the following years. Dylan suffered constant fatigue, persistent coughing, reflux issues, and struggled with his mental health. Earlier this year, he endured another lengthy hospital stay after a serious lung hemorrhage, and the number of medications he required became overwhelming.

Despite his worsening condition, Dylan remained determined and hopeful. His family described him as protective, kind, and always willing to stand up for others. He shared a close bond with his sister, especially through their love of music and tattoos, and had even begun learning tattooing himself before his health deteriorated.

Just two weeks before his passing, Dylan returned home with his beloved puppy, Polar, as his mother began preparing for his long-term care. Tragically, only five days later, he passed away. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover funeral costs, while his sister urged others to cherish their loved ones. Dylan’s story stands as a reminder of life’s fragility — and the importance of holding family close.
