Pharmacist Issues Urgent Warning: The Hidden Risks of Overdoing Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, immune function, and overall health. Our bodies produce it naturally through sunlight exposure, and we can also get it from foods like fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified dairy. Yet, despite its importance, nearly 50% of people in the UK are deficient, leading many to turn to supplements.

But too much of a good thing can be dangerous. Jana Abelovska, Superintendent Pharmacist at Click Pharmacy, warns that excessive vitamin D intake can lead to serious health risks.

Why Vitamin D Matters

Vitamin D helps regulate calcium and phosphate in the body, keeping bones, teeth, and muscles healthy. While supplements can help fill the gap for those who don’t get enough from sunlight or diet, dosage matters.

The Safe Way to Supplement

  • Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA): For adults aged 19–70, the RDA is 15 mcg (600 IU).
  • Best Absorption: Since vitamin D is fat-soluble, take supplements with healthy fats (like nuts, yogurt, or avocado) to enhance absorption.
  • Forms Available: Tablets, capsules, gummies, or sprays—choose what works best for you.

The Danger of Overdosing

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, meaning it can build up in your body over time. Taking too much long-term (exceeding 4,000 IU or 100 mcg daily) can lead to hypercalcemia—an excess of calcium in the blood. This condition can cause:

  • Heart problems
  • Kidney damage
  • Bone pain and weakness

The Bottom Line

While vitamin D supplements can be beneficial, moderation is key. Stick to the recommended dose, and consult a healthcare provider before starting high-dose supplementation, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
