Introduction: The Confession That Changed Everything
Two hours before surgeons were scheduled to remove a tumor from her brain, Camila Vance received a confession that would change the course of her life.
Her husband of 15 years leaned close to her hospital bed and revealed that he had been having an affair with her closest friend. He had a child with another woman, he wanted a divorce, and he was already planning a new life without her.
But his betrayal went even further.
Alejandro believed that if his wife did not survive the operation—or if the surgery affected her memory—he might escape the consequences of what he had done. He arrived at the hospital expecting a signature, a clean break, and the freedom to begin again with the woman he had chosen over his wife.
What he did not understand was that the luxurious life he had enjoyed for years was not built on his own wealth.
It had been funded by Camila.
And while Alejandro was busy planning his future, the woman he believed was powerless was about to take control of everything she had spent years protecting.
She did not scream. She did not beg him to stay. She did not demand answers in the middle of a hospital room.
Instead, she signed the papers, made a phone call, and began putting her financial affairs in order.
By the following morning, Alejandro would discover that losing his wife was only the beginning of his problems.
Part 1: The Divorce Papers Before Surgery
Two hours before her scheduled brain surgery, Camila Vance lay in a private hospital room in Chicago, trying to remain calm.
At 45, she had already endured six months of medical appointments, scans, difficult conversations, and sleepless nights after doctors discovered a tumor in her brain. The operation was expected to be complicated, and although her medical team had prepared her for the risks, she had tried to focus on the possibility of recovery.
She had expected her husband to be there for her.
Instead, Alejandro walked through the hospital door wearing a tailored suit, polished shoes, and an expensive fragrance that filled the room before he even spoke.
He carried a leather portfolio.
Camila initially assumed he had brought documents related to her medical care or perhaps something he needed her to review before the operation. She looked at him, waiting for the reassurance she desperately wanted to hear.
He placed the portfolio on her blanket.
Then he said something she would never forget.
“Sign the divorce papers before they open up your skull. If you don’t wake up, at least Claudia and I can get married without any red tape.”
For several seconds, Camila could not find the words to respond.
She stared at the man she had loved for 15 years, wondering whether she had misunderstood him. The room seemed suddenly smaller, and the steady rhythm of the medical equipment became impossible to ignore.
“What’s this supposed to mean?” she finally asked.
Alejandro opened the portfolio and slid the papers toward her.
“It’s exactly what it looks like. I want a divorce.”
He explained that he had a business lunch scheduled later that day and did not want his personal affairs interfering with his plans. His tone was casual, almost impatient, as if he were discussing a routine business transaction rather than ending a marriage moments before his wife faced a potentially life-changing operation.
Then he revealed the real reason for his urgency.
“Claudia and I are ready to move forward. Her baby just turned one. My son. I’ve waited long enough.”
Camila felt her stomach tighten.
Claudia was not a stranger. She had been Camila’s closest friend since high school. She had shared family celebrations, private conversations, birthdays, holidays, and years of memories with her.
When Camila received her diagnosis six months earlier, Claudia had been among the first people to offer support.
She had hugged Camila and promised to help her through treatment. She had reassured her that Alejandro would be taken care of while Camila focused on getting better.
Now, those memories took on a different meaning.
The person Camila had trusted to stand beside her had apparently been helping her husband build a second life behind her back.
“How long has this been going on?” Camila asked.
Alejandro shrugged.
“That doesn’t matter anymore.”
His answer hurt almost as much as the confession itself.
He continued explaining that Claudia was younger, healthier, and capable of giving him the family he claimed he had always wanted. He spoke about their future as though the years he had spent married to Camila were merely an inconvenience he had finally decided to remove.
Then he made another cruel remark.
“You have to understand that I deserve a real family.”
Camila looked at him in disbelief.
For years, she had believed their inability to have a child was a private sadness they had faced together. She had never imagined that Alejandro would eventually use it as a weapon against her.
He told her that Claudia had given him something he believed his marriage could not provide.
A child. A future. A reason to leave.
And because Camila was about to undergo brain surgery, he wanted the divorce finalized immediately.
“If something goes wrong,” he explained, “I don’t want to deal with inheritance disputes, probate, or hospital bureaucracy.”
His words revealed more than he intended.
He was not thinking about whether his wife would survive. He was thinking about what might happen to him if she did not.
For 15 years, Camila had believed she was building a life with a man who would stand beside her when things became difficult. Now, as she lay beneath a hospital blanket with an IV attached to her wrist, she realized that he had already begun planning how to move on without her.
She could have screamed.
She could have thrown the papers at him or demanded that he explain every lie he had told her.
But something inside her became strangely still.
“Okay,” she said.
Alejandro looked surprised.
“What?”
“I’ll sign.”
He studied her face, apparently waiting for an argument. When none came, he pushed the papers closer.
Camila took the pen and signed where he indicated.
Her hand trembled slightly, but she completed every required line and returned the documents to him.
Alejandro smiled.
He wished her luck with the operation, gathered his portfolio, and walked out without kissing her or touching her shoulder.
The door closed behind him.
Camila remained motionless for several seconds.
Then she turned toward the window and allowed herself one quiet breath.
She had survived the shock of his confession. Now she needed to think clearly.
Because Alejandro had made one enormous mistake.
He had assumed that the woman lying in the hospital bed had nothing left to protect herself with.
He had never understood the financial foundation of their marriage.
And he had certainly never understood the extent of her family’s wealth.
Part 2: The Fortune Her Husband Never Knew He Was Using
Camila had not inherited her money through marriage.
She had inherited it from her late father, a businessman who had spent four decades building a commercial real estate portfolio in and around Chicago.
When he died, Camila received properties, investment holdings, and assets administered through a family trust. The trust had been established to preserve the estate and maintain a clear distinction between her inherited assets and her personal financial obligations.
It was not something she discussed casually.
In fact, very few people understood the full extent of her inheritance.
Camila had always preferred privacy. She believed wealth should provide security, not become a tool for impressing others. She had seen people change when money entered a conversation, and she did not want her marriage to become a competition over who possessed more.
Alejandro knew that her family had been comfortable financially, but he had never bothered to understand the details.
He enjoyed the downtown condominium, the expensive dinners, the designer clothing, the luxury vacations, and the credit cards that seemed to make every purchase effortless.
He wore watches that cost more than many people’s monthly salaries. He traveled without worrying about hotel bills. He sent money to his parents whenever they needed assistance with their struggling carpentry workshop.
Over time, he began behaving as though these privileges were the natural rewards of his own success.
The truth was far less flattering.
Many of those expenses had been paid through Camila’s private resources. The platinum cards he carried were issued to him as an authorized user, and the financial support provided to his parents came from funds Camila had voluntarily made available.
She had done these things because she loved him.
She wanted him to feel secure. She wanted his parents to have a chance to keep their business operating. She wanted their marriage to be a partnership in which neither person felt diminished by the other’s circumstances.
Unfortunately, Alejandro had mistaken generosity for entitlement.
He had become so accustomed to receiving that he no longer asked where the money came from.
And because Camila had never used her inheritance to humiliate him, he had convinced himself that she depended on him.
That misunderstanding would soon become impossible to maintain.
Before the surgical team arrived, Camila made herself a promise.
“If I wake up, the lies end here.”
She did not know exactly what she would do next. She was still frightened about the operation, and the immediate future remained uncertain.
But she knew she could no longer allow Alejandro to make decisions about her life while she remained unaware of what he had done.
The surgical team arrived shortly afterward.
Camila was taken to the operating room, where doctors worked for seven hours to remove the tumor.
When she finally opened her eyes in recovery, her neurosurgeon gave her the news she had been hoping for.
The operation had been successful. The tumor had been removed, and there had been no major complications.
Camila was alive.
Her memory was intact.
And the betrayal she had endured had not disappeared with the anesthesia.
Alejandro had hoped that the uncertainty surrounding her surgery might help him escape a difficult conversation. Instead, he had given her a reason to examine every part of the life they had built together.
For the first time in years, Camila began looking at her marriage without making excuses for her husband.
She would not rush into revenge. She would not act out of anger. And she would not make threats she could not legally support.
She would protect herself.
And she would do it carefully.
Part 3: The Phone Call That Changed the Financial Picture
A week after surgery, Camila was strong enough to walk short distances along the hospital corridor with assistance.
Her doctors continued monitoring her recovery, and she was instructed to avoid strenuous activity. Emotionally, however, she was already beginning to regain a sense of control.
The first person she called was Richard Vance, the attorney who had managed her family’s estate for years.
Richard knew the structure of the trust, the properties associated with it, and the arrangements Camila had made to support her household.
When he answered, she told him what had happened.
She explained the divorce papers, Alejandro’s confession, Claudia’s child, and the timing of the demand.
Richard listened without interrupting.
When she finished, he asked several questions about the documents she had signed. He wanted to establish whether the papers were a proposed settlement, a draft agreement, or a document that might have been filed with a court.
Camila did not pretend to know the answers.
“I signed what he put in front of me. I want you to review everything before I do anything else.”
Richard agreed.
He also recommended several immediate steps to protect her finances while the legal situation was reviewed.
First, they would examine the voluntary monthly payments Camila had been making to Alejandro’s parents and determine how to discontinue future payments without violating any existing obligations.
Second, they would remove Alejandro’s authorized-user privileges from credit accounts funded by her assets, subject to the applicable account terms.
Third, they would review joint bank accounts, outstanding bills, property records, and any business interests that might be affected by the separation.
Finally, Richard wanted a complete record of all financial transactions connected to the marriage.
“Everything needs to be documented,” he told her. “We do this properly, and we don’t make decisions based on assumptions.”
“That’s exactly what I want,” Camila replied.
She was not interested in empty threats or dramatic confrontations.
She wanted clarity.
She wanted to know which assets were hers, which obligations she had actually agreed to assume, and whether Alejandro had used any of her property or financial information without authorization.
Richard began the review immediately.
By the following morning, the first consequences became apparent.
Alejandro was standing at a dealership, attempting to purchase a new SUV for Claudia, when his platinum card was declined.
He tried it again.
The transaction still would not go through.
Annoyed, he contacted the card issuer and learned that his access had been removed.
He immediately called Camila.
“What did you do to my accounts?”
Camila was resting when the call came in. She answered calmly.
“Which accounts are you talking about?”
“Don’t play games with me. My card was declined.”
“Then perhaps you should pay with your own money.”
There was a brief silence.
Then Alejandro’s voice rose.
He accused her of being vindictive and claimed she was using money to punish him for making an honest decision about their marriage.
Camila listened without interrupting.
When he finally stopped, she responded with one question.
“Why did you think you were entitled to keep using money that wasn’t yours?”
He began shouting again.
She ended the call.
For the first time, Alejandro was being forced to distinguish between his own income and the financial privileges he had enjoyed throughout their marriage.
He had assumed those privileges would continue regardless of how he treated the person providing them.
Camila had no intention of allowing that assumption to govern her future.
Part 4: Her Best Friend Arrived Without Flowers
Two hours after Alejandro’s angry call, Claudia appeared at Camila’s hospital room.
She wore a designer dress, carried an expensive handbag, and looked remarkably comfortable for someone visiting a woman who had recently undergone brain surgery.
She had not brought flowers.
She did not ask how Camila was feeling.
Instead, she sat beside the bed and smiled.
“Alejandro said you signed everything. Thank you, Camila. We can finally be a real family.”
Camila studied her former friend.
There had been a time when she would have recognized every small change in Claudia’s expression. She had known her since adolescence, when their biggest concerns involved school, relationships, and what their lives might look like as adults.
They had grown older together.
They had celebrated one another’s successes and shared personal disappointments.
At least, that was what Camila had believed.
Now she wondered how many of those conversations had taken place while Claudia was hiding the affair.
“How long have you been planning this?” Camila asked.
Claudia waved the question away.
“What’s the point of discussing the past? Alejandro and I have a future together.”
She took out her phone and showed Camila a photograph from a luxury resort in Miami.
Alejandro stood beside Claudia and the toddler, smiling at the camera. He wore the gold watch Camila had bought him for their tenth wedding anniversary.
Claudia explained that they were preparing to move permanently into the downtown condominium.
She referred to it as Alejandro’s home.
She spoke about furniture, travel, and the lifestyle she expected them to maintain.
At no point did she acknowledge the financial arrangements that had made those privileges possible.
Camila let her talk.
The more Claudia revealed, the clearer it became that she had accepted Alejandro’s version of reality without questioning it.
Perhaps she believed he had earned everything he possessed. Perhaps she had never wondered why he could afford such an expensive lifestyle. Or perhaps she simply preferred not to ask questions that might interfere with what she wanted.
Whatever the explanation, Claudia appeared convinced that Camila had already lost.
“I hope you understand that Alejandro deserves to be happy,” Claudia added.
Camila looked at her quietly.
“I hope you understand that you don’t know nearly as much as you think you do.”
Claudia’s smile faded for a moment, but she quickly recovered.
She stood, adjusted her handbag, and left without another word.
That afternoon, Alejandro called again.
This time, the video showed the interior of the condominium.
Camila watched as several of her belongings were being placed into trash bags. Claudia moved through the room, trying on one of Camila’s cashmere coats. Alejandro’s parents were present, helping them sort through the apartment.
Then Alejandro picked up a wooden keepsake box.
It contained photographs of Camila’s parents and a vintage pocket watch that had belonged to her father.
“This junk is going straight to the dumpster,” he announced.
Camila felt a sharp wave of anger.
“Don’t touch those.”
He laughed.
Claudia laughed with him.
Then Alejandro ended the call.
Camila immediately contacted Richard and explained what she had seen.
She wanted her personal property protected, particularly the photographs and the watch. Richard advised her to preserve any evidence of the call and to avoid confronting Alejandro directly while the situation was being reviewed.
Within minutes, he began arranging the appropriate legal steps to recover and safeguard her belongings.
But when Richard returned to the hospital later that day, he carried a folder that contained information far more serious than a dispute over property.
Alejandro’s financial problems were beginning to extend beyond the marriage.
Part 5: The Loan That Raised Serious Questions
Richard placed a thick gray folder on the table beside Camila’s bed.
During his review of the family’s financial records, he had discovered information suggesting that Alejandro had attempted to present himself as the owner of one of Camila’s commercial office buildings.
The apparent purpose was to secure an unauthorized business loan.
The property was not his.
It was associated with a real estate holding company controlled through Camila’s family trust.
Richard explained that the documents raised concerns about possible misrepresentation and that the matter needed to be examined carefully.
The company’s management had already begun reviewing the circumstances surrounding the proposed financing.
Camila listened closely.
“Did he actually receive the money?”
“That is still being established,” Richard replied. “We need to distinguish between what the documents show, what the company has confirmed, and what investigators may ultimately determine.”
Camila appreciated his caution.
She did not want speculation. She wanted facts.
Richard then turned to another section of the folder.
While examining records relevant to the divorce, his team had encountered information concerning a paternity and child-support proceeding involving Claudia.
The proceeding had been filed months earlier in Cook County.
The file reportedly contained a certified genetic testing report concerning the toddler Claudia had described as Alejandro’s son.
Richard explained that the available report indicated that another man was identified as the child’s biological father.
Camila stared at him.
“Are you saying Alejandro isn’t the father?”
“According to the report we’ve reviewed, he is not identified as the biological father. We need to verify the complete record and its legal significance before drawing further conclusions.”
Camila leaned back against her pillow.
For the first time since the operation, she had no immediate response.
Alejandro had betrayed their marriage because he believed Claudia had given him something Camila never could.
He had called her inadequate. He had dismissed 15 years of shared life. He had demanded that she sign divorce papers before a dangerous operation because he wanted to begin a new family without complications.
And now there was evidence suggesting that the child at the center of his decision might not be biologically his.
Camila did not feel triumphant.
She felt exhausted.
The betrayal had been painful enough without the additional complications of financial misconduct, property disputes, and questions about a child’s paternity.
Still, the new information changed the picture.
Alejandro had not merely made a reckless decision about his marriage. He appeared to have built his future around assumptions he had never bothered to verify.
And those assumptions were beginning to collapse.
Part 6: The Woman Who Owned the Building
Two days later, Camila’s doctor approved a short leave from the hospital, provided she avoided strenuous activity and followed her recovery plan.
At nine that morning, a private car dropped her outside the glass skyscraper where Alejandro’s employer maintained its headquarters.
Camila had not planned to visit the building as a public spectacle. Richard had arranged a meeting with the company’s leadership to address the suspected financing issue and establish the ownership records.
The meeting was important for another reason.
The building belonged to Sterling Real Estate Holdings, a company controlled through Camila’s family trust.
Her family’s investments also represented a significant financial relationship with Alejandro’s employer.
For years, Alejandro had worked in the commercial real estate industry and had become increasingly proud of his professional position. He spoke about promotions, business contacts, and the influence he believed he was accumulating.
He had never asked enough questions about the buildings and investments that surrounded him.
He certainly had never imagined that his wife’s family had a direct financial interest in the property he was now accused of attempting to use as collateral.
When Camila entered the marble lobby with Richard, she heard Alejandro’s voice before she saw him.
He was standing near the reception area with Claudia, the toddler, and his parents.
Several employees had gathered nearby.
Alejandro was introducing Claudia and the child as his real family.
“I finally cut ties with a sick, helpless wife who was living off my hard work,” he announced.
Camila stopped a few feet away.
For a moment, she simply watched him.
He appeared comfortable in the lobby, surrounded by people who had spent years listening to him discuss his success. His confidence had survived the canceled credit cards and the questions surrounding the condominium.
He still seemed convinced that the world would accept his version of events.
Claudia stood beside him, smiling.
His parents looked less certain.
Their carpentry workshop had relied on regular financial support from Camila, and the end of those payments had exposed how fragile their business arrangements had become. They were facing pressure from equipment loans and other expenses they had previously managed with her assistance.
Alejandro had assured them that everything would work out.
He expected his anticipated promotion to vice president to provide the solution.
Then the executive elevator opened.
Stephen Miller, the company’s CEO, stepped into the lobby with Richard and Camila.
Alejandro saw his wife and laughed.
“Did you seriously come here to beg me to take you back?”
Camila did not respond.
He walked toward her and demanded that she reactivate his credit cards. He insisted that she was withholding money that belonged to him and attempting to embarrass him in front of his colleagues.
Before the argument could continue, Stephen stepped between them.
“Mr. Vance, stop speaking to her that way.”
Alejandro looked irritated.
“This is a private marital matter.”
Stephen’s expression remained serious.
“It became a corporate matter when questions were raised about documents submitted in connection with an unauthorized financing arrangement involving this building.”
Alejandro’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Stephen explained that the building was owned by Sterling Real Estate Holdings, which was controlled through Camila’s family trust.
He also explained that the trust had an established investment relationship with the company.
The information was not presented as a personal threat. It was part of the ownership and financing review that had brought them together.
Alejandro stared at Camila.
“You don’t have that kind of money.”
Richard opened his portfolio and produced certified property records, corporate documents, and financial statements.
He explained that the downtown condominium had been purchased using Camila’s inherited assets, subject to the applicable ownership records. The platinum cards Alejandro had used were linked to accounts funded by her resources, and the monthly payments to his parents had been voluntary transfers from her private funds.
One revelation followed another.
Alejandro’s mother covered her mouth.
“You paid off our equipment mortgage?”
“Yes,” Camila replied.
His father looked at Richard’s documents.
“And the three thousand dollars every month?”
“That came from me too.”
For years, Camila’s in-laws had accepted her financial assistance while treating her as though she contributed nothing to the family.
They had mistaken her privacy for dependence.
They had mistaken her generosity for an obligation.
Now, standing in the building owned by her family’s investment company, they were beginning to understand how much they had misunderstood.
“The monthly transfers are over,” Camila said.
Her mother-in-law immediately tried to soften her tone.
She explained that the workshop was struggling and that the family had always appreciated the help.
Camila listened.
Then she answered with measured calm.
“You made it clear that I was never really family to you. I’m simply respecting that decision.”
Alejandro looked furious.
He insisted that because they were still married, he was entitled to a portion of her wealth.
Richard corrected him.
The ownership and legal treatment of inherited assets depended on the applicable law and the specific documents involved. Camila’s trust records and property arrangements would be reviewed through the divorce process, and no one could simply declare her inheritance marital property because it was convenient.
Richard also pointed out that the divorce papers Alejandro had presented required careful legal review. Camila’s signature alone did not automatically resolve every question concerning the validity, enforceability, or filing status of the documents.
Alejandro looked at his wife as though she had deceived him.
“You let me believe I was paying for everything.”
Camila held his gaze.
“No. I protected your pride. You decided to turn it into arrogance.”
For the first time, Alejandro appeared uncertain about what would happen next.
He had entered the building expecting to demonstrate his success.
Instead, he was being confronted with questions about money, ownership, and the foundation of the life he had claimed as his own.
And there was still one more truth he had not fully confronted.
The child he had proudly presented as his heir might not be his biological son.
Part 7: The Child at the Center of the Betrayal
Claudia had remained near the edge of the lobby while Alejandro argued with Camila and the company’s leadership.
At first, she appeared confident that the confrontation would end with Alejandro regaining control. She had believed his claims about the condominium, the credit cards, and his financial independence.
Now she was watching those claims unravel.
She grabbed Alejandro’s arm.
“You told me you were a multimillionaire. You said the condo was yours.”
Alejandro struggled to answer.
“I thought it was.”
Claudia looked at him in disbelief.
“You thought it was?”
Camila watched the exchange without interrupting.
She had no desire to participate in their argument. The decisions they had made were their responsibility, and she was no longer interested in protecting either of them from the consequences.
Richard opened the gray folder and referred to the paternity matter his team had identified during the legal review.
He explained that the available court record included a genetic testing report that identified another man as the child’s biological father.
Alejandro stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
Richard did not raise his voice.
“The report we reviewed does not identify you as the biological father. The underlying court record and any related legal questions must be handled through the appropriate process.”
Alejandro turned toward Claudia.
“Tell him it’s wrong.”
She looked away.
The silence was enough to make the situation even more painful.
Alejandro had spent months believing he was the father of the toddler. He had told colleagues about his son and used the child as part of the explanation for why he needed to end his marriage.
Now he was confronting the possibility that the family he had sacrificed so much to build rested on a false assumption.
Before he could say anything else, another man entered the lobby accompanied by legal representatives and investigators.
His name was Marcus Vance, a nightclub owner who had been identified in the paternity and child-support proceedings involving Claudia.
The documents available to Richard suggested that Marcus had been involved in the earlier dispute over the child’s paternity.
His presence added another layer of tension to the confrontation.
Alejandro looked from Marcus to Claudia.
“What is he doing here?”
Marcus’s representatives explained that they had come to address the legal proceedings already underway. They were not there to settle a private argument in the lobby, and the matter involving the child would have to be handled through the appropriate legal channels.
Claudia appeared increasingly distressed.
Alejandro turned toward her.
“You told me that boy was mine.”
She finally responded.
“You wanted an heir so badly that you believed everything I told you.”
Her answer only deepened the conflict.
For Alejandro, the revelation was not simply about biology. It forced him to reconsider the story he had told himself about his marriage.
He had described Camila as a woman who could not give him the family he wanted. He had used that belief to justify his affair, his decision to leave, and the humiliation he had inflicted on his wife before surgery.
Now, according to the report Richard had reviewed, the child he had used to support that argument was not biologically his.
The irony was impossible to ignore.
Yet the child himself had done nothing wrong.
He was too young to understand the adult decisions surrounding him. Whatever happened between Alejandro, Claudia, and Marcus, the boy deserved to be protected from public humiliation and unnecessary conflict.
Camila understood that distinction.
She felt no need to blame a child for the choices of the adults around him.
Her anger was directed at the people who had deceived her, not at an innocent toddler caught in a complicated family situation.
Alejandro, however, was struggling to process the information.
“You told me Camila was a burden,” he said to Claudia. “You said we were building a future together.”
Claudia’s expression hardened.
“And you told me the money was yours.”
“I thought it was!”
“Then you were lying to me too.”
Their argument grew louder, but Camila stepped away.
She had already heard enough.
She had spent years trying to understand why Alejandro treated her generosity as though it were weakness. She had spent months trying to recover physically while believing her closest friend was helping her husband through the crisis.
She did not need to remain in the lobby to watch their relationship collapse.
The truth was already visible.
They had built their plans around assumptions, appearances, and money they did not fully understand.
Now they were being forced to confront the difference between what they wanted to believe and what the records actually showed.
Part 8: The Meeting That Ended Alejandro’s Career
While the dispute over the child’s paternity continued, Stephen Miller returned the conversation to the matter that had brought the company executives into the lobby.
The internal investigation into Alejandro’s professional conduct had uncovered concerns involving altered invoices, unauthorized expense claims, and an attempted financing arrangement connected to property he did not own.
The company had already been reviewing aspects of his work before Camila arrived.
The documents involving the building had intensified the inquiry.
Stephen explained that the company had concluded its preliminary employment review and had decided to terminate Alejandro for cause, subject to the terms of his employment agreement and applicable procedures.
“You are terminated, effective immediately,” Stephen said.
Alejandro went pale.
He had built much of his identity around his professional position. He spoke about promotions as though they were inevitable and believed his career would provide the money he needed to support Claudia and the child.
Now he faced the loss of his job at the same time that his financial privileges were disappearing.
He looked toward Camila.
“You’re doing this to me.”
She shook her head.
“I didn’t submit those documents.”....
