Last night, my boyfriend invited me to dinner to meet his family. As soon as he introduced me, he looked at me and joked, “Hope you brought your wallet. We’re starving.” I froze. Then his dad stood up and said, “Don’t worry, we’re only teasing you.” The whole table burst into laughter, and I realized they were just trying to break the ice—though their humor was a bit stronger than I expected.
My boyfriend squeezed my hand, assuring me they meant well, and his mom invited us to sit. The house smelled like warm bread and roasted vegetables, and slowly my nerves settled. They began sharing childhood stories about him—including the time he tried to cook pasta without water. I found myself laughing despite the rocky start.....
