For my mother’s 70th birthday, she insisted on cooking the entire meal herself for 23 people. For three days, she worked nonstop: homemade pasta, roasted chicken, desserts, salads—our kitchen was overflowing. She was exhausted but proud, hoping her grandparents would be proud too.

Two hours before the party, my dad texted: “We’ve decided to celebrate at a restaurant instead. It’s adults only.”
