My phone rang on a quiet Thursday afternoon while I was working from home. The call was from my son Leo’s kindergarten, and the secretary calmly informed me that my mother-in-law, Brenda, had picked him up because of a supposed family emergency. My heart dropped immediately. Brenda was not authorized to collect him, and there was no emergency. When I tried calling her, she ignored every call and message.
