Mother-in-law charged after baby dies in violent attack

Mother-in-Law Allegedly Struck New Mother, Causing Baby to Fall: Hospital Discovery Leads to Investigation

At 12:17 a.m., Emily Carter was desperately trying to calm her six-week-old daughter when a confrontation inside a Chicago apartment changed her life forever. Moments after her mother-in-law allegedly struck her, the newborn fell from her arms and became unresponsive. At the hospital, doctors delivered devastating news—and then discovered injuries that raised questions about what had happened to the baby weeks earlier.

The Night Everything Changed

Emily Carter had spent most of the night trying to comfort her six-week-old daughter, Lily, inside a small apartment on Chicago’s South Side.

The baby had been crying for nearly an hour and had developed a mild fever earlier that evening. Emily was exhausted but increasingly concerned that something might be wrong.

Her husband, Daniel, was away working a trucking route in Missouri. Because the couple had been struggling financially, Emily and Lily had temporarily been staying with Daniel’s mother, Margaret Hayes.

The arrangement had become increasingly difficult.

According to Emily, Margaret frequently criticized the way she cared for Lily and accused her of being overly sensitive whenever she expressed concern about the baby.

That night, however, Emily believed the situation had become more serious.

She continued walking through the living room with Lily against her shoulder, gently rocking the infant.

“It’s okay, Lily. Mommy’s here.”

Then Margaret came out of her bedroom.

“Make her stop,” she reportedly demanded.

Emily explained that Lily was sick and that she believed the baby needed medical attention.

Margaret allegedly dismissed the concern.

“What she needs is a mother who knows what she’s doing,” she reportedly said.

The argument escalated.

According to Emily’s account, Margaret then struck her across the face.

The impact caused Emily to lose her balance. As she struggled to maintain her grip, Lily slipped from her arms and fell onto the hardwood floor.

The baby’s crying stopped.

Emily immediately dropped to her knees.

“Lily? Lily!”

The six-week-old infant was unresponsive.

Rather than remaining in the apartment, Emily grabbed her phone and keys and rushed out with her daughter.

She later told investigators that Margaret did not immediately call for help.

Instead, Emily said, Margaret told her to “shut her up” or leave the home.

Emily chose to leave.

She rushed Lily to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, hoping doctors could save her.

But the news she received there was devastating.

A doctor eventually approached Emily and told her that Lily had died.

The grief was overwhelming.

But the medical examination soon raised another question—one that would transform the tragedy into a criminal investigation.

Doctors Discover Earlier Injuries

During the examination, doctors identified injuries that appeared to predate the fall.

According to the story, imaging revealed two healing rib fractures that appeared to be approximately two weeks old.

The discovery immediately prompted medical staff to question whether Lily had previously been injured.

Doctors asked Emily whether the baby had recently experienced an accident, such as a fall from a changing table or another household incident.

Emily said she knew of no such accident.

But she remembered something that had happened two weeks earlier.

She had left Lily with Margaret while she worked a five-hour shift at a local diner.

When Emily returned, Lily seemed unusually quiet and appeared uncomfortable when Emily picked her up.

Margaret had reportedly dismissed the behavior as ordinary fussiness.

At the time, Emily accepted the explanation.

After Lily’s death, however, the memory took on a completely different meaning.

Margaret had been caring for the baby during the period when the older injuries were believed to have occurred.

Emily told medical staff that she had not known about any accident involving Lily.

She then made a decision that would trigger the police investigation.

She called 911.

“My daughter is dead,” Emily reportedly told the dispatcher. “My mother-in-law hit me.”

She also told authorities that doctors had discovered evidence of previous injuries.

That information prompted investigators to look beyond the events of the final night.....
