“Mommy, Look! That’s the Woman Who Comes Into Your Bedroom When You’re at Work!”: What a Five-Year-Old Revealed in a Supermarket

Three months after losing her mother, a grieving woman was still struggling to find comfort in the smallest reminders of the person she missed most.

Then, during an ordinary trip to the supermarket with her five-year-old son, everything changed.

Her son suddenly pointed toward a stranger near the bakery section and made a statement that sent a wave of fear through her entire body.

“Mommy, look! That’s the woman who comes to our house when you’re at work.”

Moments later, he added something even more disturbing.

“She goes into the room upstairs.”

For months, there had been strange details she had tried to ignore: unexplained paint on her son’s hands, a locked bedroom, secretive phone calls, and her husband’s unusual behavior.

At first, she had blamed her suspicions on grief.

But after hearing what her son had to say, she began to wonder whether something far more serious had been happening inside her own home.

What she discovered behind the locked door, however, was not what she expected.

The Woman My Son Recognized

Three months after my mother passed away, I still found myself searching for ways to feel close to her.

Sometimes, it was through old photographs. Sometimes, it was through the recipes she used to make for our family. And sometimes, it was something as simple as the silk scarf she had worn for years.

One quiet afternoon, I stood in my bedroom folding my five-year-old son Leo’s tiny T-shirts. As I worked, I noticed my mother’s scarf resting nearby.

Without thinking, I picked it up.

I pressed the fabric gently against my face and breathed in.

The scent was faint now, but I could still recognize it.

Jasmine.

My mother’s favorite perfume.

For a moment, I closed my eyes and wished I could hold onto that memory forever.

“Mommy, are you crying again?”

I looked down.

Leo was standing beside the bed.

I quickly wiped my eyes and forced a smile.

“No, baby. I’m okay.”

“But you’re crying.”

“I know.”

I looked down at the scarf.

“I was just smelling Grandma’s scarf.”

Leo smiled softly.

“Grandma smells like flowers.”

His innocent words made my heart ache.

“Yes,” I said quietly. “She did.”

Leo climbed onto the bed and began playing with one of his toys. That was when I noticed something unusual.

There was silver paint on his thumb.

A little more was smeared across his elbow.

“Leo,” I asked, “where did you get that paint?”

Before he could answer, my husband Mark appeared in the doorway carrying a cup of coffee.

“Oh, that,” he said casually. “They’ve been painting stars and planets in art class.”

I looked at Leo.

Then I looked back at Mark.

It sounded completely reasonable.

Children came home covered in paint all the time.

Still, something about the quiet smile on Mark’s face stayed with me.

A few minutes later, he left the house for what he described as an errand.

It was a Wednesday morning.

At the time, I thought nothing of it.

Or at least, I tried not to.

The Locked Room

Later that evening, I carried a stack of clean towels upstairs.

As I passed the guest bedroom, I tried the door.

It was locked.

That immediately struck me as strange.

We rarely locked doors inside our home.

I turned the handle again.

Nothing.

When Mark came upstairs, I mentioned it.

“The guest room is locked.”

He barely looked up.

“Oh, the door must be stuck.”

“Stuck?”

“Yeah. I’ll take care of it later.”

That should have been the end of the conversation.

And technically, it was.

But something about his response bothered me.

Maybe it was how quickly he dismissed the question.

Maybe it was the fact that he never actually checked the door.

Or maybe I was simply grieving and seeing problems where there were none.

After losing my mother, I had learned that grief could change the way you looked at the world.

Small problems could suddenly feel enormous.

Silence could feel threatening.

An unanswered phone call could make your heart race.

So I told myself to let it go.

Trust, I thought, meant not turning every unexplained detail into a reason for suspicion.

I walked away.

But the uneasy feeling stayed.

A Normal Afternoon Turns Into Something Else

By the following afternoon, I had almost convinced myself that I was overthinking everything.

Leo and I went to the supermarket to pick up groceries.

We needed milk, bread, apples, and a few things for dinner.

Our anniversary was coming up, and for the first time in weeks, I felt as though life was beginning to settle into something resembling normal again.

Leo sat happily inside the shopping cart while I moved through the aisles.

Everything seemed ordinary.

Until suddenly, it wasn’t.

Leo grabbed my sleeve.

“Mommy, look.”

I turned toward him.

“What is it?”

He pointed toward the bakery section.

A young woman wearing a green dress stood several feet away, examining a loaf of bread.

Before I could ask why he was pointing at her, Leo spoke.

And the words that came out of his mouth changed everything.

“That’s the lady who comes to our house when you’re at work.”

I froze.

For a second, I thought I had misunderstood him.

“What?”

Leo continued, completely unaware of the effect his words were having on me.

“She plays in the room upstairs.”

My heart began pounding.

I crouched beside the shopping cart and tried to keep my voice calm.

“What do you mean, sweetheart?”

“She plays games.”

“With who?”

Leo looked at me as though the answer were obvious.

“With Daddy.”

I stared at him.

“Daddy said it’s a secret,” Leo added.

My stomach dropped.

I tried to speak carefully.

“So you weren’t supposed to tell me?”

Leo’s eyes suddenly widened.

“I didn’t mean to.”

“You just told me.”

He immediately looked worried.

Everything I had ignored over the previous few months suddenly returned to my mind.

The silver paint.

The locked guest bedroom.

Mark’s private smile whenever he checked his phone.

The mysterious errands.

The unanswered questions.

Until that moment, I had blamed my uneasiness on grief.

Now, every strange detail seemed to be connecting.

And every connection appeared to lead toward the same possibility.

Was my husband hiding another woman inside our home?

The Details I Could No Longer Ignore

I took a deep breath.

I needed more information.

“How many times has she been to our house?”

Leo began counting on his fingers.

“One… two… three…”

Eventually, he stopped.

“A lot.”

“A lot?”

He nodded.

“But only when you’re at work.”

My hands tightened around the shopping cart.

Then Leo added another detail.

“And she brings the tall bag.”

I looked at him.

“What tall bag?”

“The one with the sticks.”

For a moment, my mind raced.

Sticks?

What could that mean?

Paintbrushes?

Golf clubs?

Something else entirely?

I hated the fact that my imagination immediately began filling in the gaps with possibilities I didn’t want to consider.

For several seconds, I stood completely still.

I could leave.....
