The reading of Arthur Vance’s will should have been a solemn but straightforward affair—condolences, legal formalities, and the weight of grief. Instead, Valeria’s world imploded in an instant.

Valeria stared at Victoria, certain she had misheard. Just hours earlier, her husband, Julian Cross, had texted her a loving reminder about the weather. Yet the attorney’s computer screen displayed an undeniable truth: a finalized divorce decree, signed and executed without Valeria’s knowledge.

“I live with my husband,” Valeria whispered, her voice hollow.

Victoria slid the court documents across the desk. The petition, property settlement, and waiver of spousal support all bore Valeria’s signature—one she didn’t remember providing. The notification address was routed through NexaData, the tech company she and Julian had built together, rather than their home.

Then she remembered.

The Deception Unfolds

Weeks earlier, as Valeria sat vigil at her father’s hospital bedside, Julian had handed her a thick stack of documents. “These are urgent for the Series A funding round,” he had said. “Sign here, honey. If we don’t submit this today, the whole deal falls through.”

Exhausted and trusting, Valeria had signed without reading. She never imagined those papers were a divorce petition.

Victoria’s next words offered a grim silver lining. “Your father left an estate worth $35 million in liquid assets, stock options, and commercial properties. But he left an ironclad stipulation: everything passes exclusively to you, completely separate from any marital property. Because you are legally divorced, Julian cannot touch a single dime.”

Even in death, Arthur Vance had protected his daughter.....
