I was picking up my 3-year-old daughter from daycare one sunny afternoon when we passed a small grocery store. She tugged my hand and asked, eyes shining, “Daddy, do we need a loaf of bread? Let’s buy one.” I smiled, touched by her thoughtfulness. She must really love bread, I thought. “Of course, sweetheart,” I said. We went inside, picked a warm loaf, and paid for it.
I imagined her enjoying it with butter once we got home. But as soon as we stepped outside, she looked up at me with a proud little grin and said, “Great! Now we can feed the little birds in the park!” My heart melted. While I was thinking about what we needed, she was thinking about giving to others.....
