The drive to Richard’s estate was tense from the start. Daniel sat beside me, checking his phone every few seconds while reminding me—again—to keep our daughter, May, close all night. It was the third time he’d said it that week.

“I really need tonight to go well,” he muttered, tugging at his collar. I kept my eyes on the road, telling him it was just a birthday party. But Daniel shook his head. His boss, Richard, had been stressed, and he needed to appear “reliable and loyal.”

The word loyal lingered. Over the years, I’d learned what these events required: smile politely, avoid difficult topics, and make our marriage look effortless. Support had started feeling less like love and more like performance management.

Most of the evening, I focused on May, keeping her from spilling juice on furniture worth more than our rent. When I found her with frosting-smeared hands near the dessert table, Richard and his wife, Vanessa, walked past. May looked up and pointed. “Mommy,” she announced, “that’s the lady who bites.”
