Five days after giving birth by C-section, Audrey Brooks was still struggling to walk without pain.
Her newborn son, Leo, was only five days old.
She expected her husband to help her into their luxury SUV, make sure the baby was safely secured, and take them home so she could finally rest.
Instead, Dominic handed her a wrinkled fifty-dollar bill and a handful of coins.
“Take the bus,” he told her.
Then he walked away with his mother and sister, leaving Audrey standing outside the hospital with their newborn son in her arms.
“Don’t make a scene,” Dominic warned.
Audrey didn’t.
She didn’t argue. She didn’t cry. She didn’t beg him to change his mind.
Instead, she looked down at the money in her hand, pulled out her phone, and called the one person she had spent years deliberately keeping out of her marriage.
Her father.
And Dominic had absolutely no idea who Audrey’s father really was—or what that one phone call would set in motion.
The Ride Home
The hospital entrance was crowded that afternoon.
Cars moved slowly through the pickup lane while nurses helped patients into waiting vehicles. Families hugged one another, carrying flowers, hospital bags, and newborn car seats.
Audrey stood beneath the entrance canopy, carefully holding Leo against her chest.
Every step hurt.
The C-section incision across her abdomen made even simple movements difficult. She had been discharged because doctors believed she was stable enough to recover at home, but “stable” did not mean pain-free.
She was exhausted.
She was sore.
And she was responsible for a five-day-old baby.
For weeks, Audrey had imagined this moment differently.
She had imagined Dominic opening the passenger door for her.
She had imagined him smiling when he saw their son.
She had imagined the two of them driving home together as a family.
Instead, Dominic walked toward the black luxury SUV and opened the driver’s door.
Audrey stared at him.
“Dominic?”
He turned around.
“What?”
“What are you doing?”
He looked genuinely irritated by the question.
“I have somewhere to be.”
Audrey glanced at the SUV.
“And the baby?”
“You have the baby.”
“And how are we getting home?”
Dominic reached into his wallet.
He pulled out a fifty-dollar bill and several coins.
He walked back toward her and placed the money in her hand.
“There.”
Audrey looked down.
Then she looked back at him.
“For the bus?”
Dominic sighed.
“Yes. For the bus.”
For several seconds, Audrey couldn’t speak.
“Dominic, I just had surgery.”
“I know.”
“I’m five days postpartum.”
“I know.”
“And Leo is five days old.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“Then you should be grateful you’re being discharged.”
Audrey stared at him in disbelief.
“Are you seriously asking me to take a city bus home with a newborn?”
“I’m asking you to stop making everything about yourself.”
He glanced toward the hospital doors.
“My mother and Natalie are waiting.”
Audrey looked at the SUV again.
It had been a wedding gift from her father.
A luxury black SUV worth more than most people earned in several years.
Dominic had driven it almost every day since their marriage.
And now he was choosing to take it to lunch with his family while his recovering wife carried their newborn onto public transportation.
“Why can’t they take another car?” Audrey asked quietly.
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Because I need this vehicle.”
“For what?”
“My family is visiting.”
Audrey almost laughed.
“You need a luxury SUV because your family is going to lunch?”
“It’s not just lunch.”
He straightened his jacket.
“It’s an important family event.”
Audrey looked at him.
“And I’m not family?”
Dominic didn’t answer.
The silence told her everything.
“Don’t Start, Audrey”
Dominic’s mother and younger sister soon emerged from the hospital.
Victoria Brooks walked toward them wearing an expensive coat and carrying a designer handbag.
Natalie followed behind her, already checking her phone.
Neither woman asked Audrey how she was feeling.
Neither asked whether the baby was healthy.
Victoria glanced at Leo for less than a second.
“Oh, you’re finally coming.”
Audrey swallowed.
“I’m still recovering.”
Victoria waved her hand dismissively.
“Everyone is tired after having a baby.”
Natalie checked the time.
“Dominic, we’re going to be late.”
Dominic nodded.
“Exactly.”
Audrey looked at him one last time.
“Can you at least take us home first?”
Dominic’s expression changed immediately.
“Don’t start, Audrey.”
“I just need to get home safely.”
“My sister was up and walking three days after giving birth,” he replied. “She didn’t make half this drama.”
Natalie smiled faintly.
“I told you she was being dramatic.”
Audrey said nothing.
Dominic picked up the diaper bag from the nurse.
He placed it inside the SUV.
Then he looked back at Audrey.
“You’ll find a seat on the bus. It’s not rush hour.”
He opened the driver’s door.
“There’s leftover rice in the refrigerator. Microwave it when you get home.”
Audrey stared at him.
“That’s what you have to say to me?”
Dominic shrugged.
“What else do you want?”
She wanted him to care.
She wanted him to understand.
She wanted him to look at her and realize that the woman standing in front of him had just gone through major abdominal surgery to bring their child into the world.
Instead, he climbed into the SUV.
Victoria and Natalie joined him.
The engine started.
Audrey stood there holding Leo.
The SUV pulled away.
And for the first time since her marriage began, she stopped making excuses for Dominic.
The Secret She Had Kept for Two Years
The city bus arrived several minutes later.
Audrey climbed the steps slowly.
Every movement caused pain.
A passenger near the front noticed her and immediately stood.
“You can take my seat.”
“Thank you,” Audrey whispered.
She sat beside the window and carefully adjusted Leo in her arms.
The bus began moving.
As Manhattan passed outside the window, Audrey watched people walking along the sidewalks.
Some carried shopping bags.
Some hurried toward offices.
Others walked hand in hand.
Life continued as normal.
But Audrey’s life had just changed.
She thought about the first time she met Dominic.
He had been charming.
Ambitious.
Funny.
He made her feel seen.
At the time, Audrey deliberately kept her family background private.
She didn’t tell him that her father was Charles Brooks, the founder of Brooks Global Corp.
She didn’t tell him about the company’s enormous network of infrastructure projects, investments, and partnerships.
She didn’t tell him about the family’s wealth.
She wanted to know whether Dominic loved her for herself.
For a while, it seemed like he did.
Then his startup began attracting major investors.
His confidence changed.
Then his behavior changed.
He became obsessed with status.
His mother began treating Audrey as though she were an inconvenience.
Natalie made sarcastic comments about Audrey’s lifestyle.
Dominic started spending more time with business associates and less time with his wife.
But Audrey continued making excuses.
She told herself success had changed him temporarily.
She told herself marriage was difficult.
She told herself having a baby would bring them closer.
Now, sitting on a bus with her five-day-old son, she finally understood.
She had not married the man she thought Dominic was.
She had married the man he had become.
The bus stopped at a traffic light.
Audrey looked through the window.
And there it was.
The same black SUV.
Only a few feet away.
Dominic was laughing.
Victoria was talking.
Natalie was taking photographs.
They were on their way to their expensive lunch.
Audrey looked at her son.....
