Her father listened without interrupting. When she finished, he exhaled slowly. “This isn’t marriage,” he said. “It’s control.”

That afternoon, Samuel made one phone call. An hour later, Henry Walsh, a private investigator he’d known for years, sat across from Rachel, asking calm, careful questions.

“Did your husband ever ask you to sign paperwork?” he asked.

She nodded. “Last year. He said it was for insurance updates.”

Her father closed his eyes. “Find it,” he told Henry.

Before she could ask what was happening, her phone buzzed. Mark’s name lit up the screen. Her father answered.

“Where is my wife?” Mark snapped. “Vanessa needs the SUV.”

Samuel’s voice was steady. “Your wife is with me.”

The next morning, they arrived at Mark’s family home with one more person—Attorney Julia Park, quiet, sharp, and prepared.

Mark opened the door with confidence. It disappeared when he saw them.

“What is this?” he demanded.
