The Night Everything Changed

Barbara sat frozen as plates shattered around her, hot gravy staining her clothes, and a shard of broken china nicking her ankle. Marvin, her husband of just three days, stood over her, breathing heavily, his face flushed from whiskey and anger.

Instead of crying, Barbara stood up and surveyed the ruined dining room. Her eyes landed on a broken piece of china, a gift from her mother. Seeing it shattered made everything painfully clear.

She laughed.
