Survivor Defies Abuse to Earn Doctorate

Selena Carter’s path to earning her doctorate was nearly derailed by a violent act of control the night before her dissertation defense. Instead of surrendering, she walked into the examination room with her head held high—and exposed a year-long financial fraud scheme in the process.

The Night of the Attack

The evening before her scheduled defense, Selena faced a horrifying confrontation in her Madison apartment. Her husband, Hunter, and his mother, Barbara, cornered her in the kitchen after days of verbal abuse about her academic pursuits.

“You are not going to that defense tomorrow,” Barbara declared. “It is finally time to stop embarrassing this entire family with your ridiculous academic obsession.”
