Dad Was Sitting Three Feet Away When My Sister Called to Say He Had Died

At 6:30 on a freezing Thursday morning, Natalie Cole received a phone call that should have shattered her world. Her sister, Vanessa, had only a few words to say: their father had died overnight. But there was one impossible problem—Richard Cole was sitting directly across from Natalie at her kitchen table, drinking coffee and stealing bacon from her plate. What began as an unbelievable lie soon unraveled into allegations of forged documents, stolen money, a decades-old family secret, and a murder that exposed the truth about who their father really was.

A Death Announcement With One Major Problem

It was supposed to be an ordinary Thursday morning.

Natalie Cole was having breakfast with her father, Richard, who had unexpectedly come to stay with her two days earlier. Dressed in his familiar navy flannel robe, Richard sat comfortably at the kitchen table, drinking fresh coffee and casually reaching across to steal pieces of bacon from Natalie’s plate.

Then the phone rang.

It was 6:30 a.m.

The caller was Natalie’s older sister, Vanessa.

Because Vanessa rarely called that early in the morning, Natalie immediately assumed something serious had happened.

She answered.

“Vanessa?”

For several seconds, Natalie could hear only the sound of a running vehicle and a turn signal clicking somewhere in the background.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Natalie, Dad died last night.”

Natalie froze.

Three feet away, Richard stopped chewing.

Natalie looked directly at him.

Then, without saying a word, she placed the phone on speaker.

“When?” she asked.

“Sometime overnight,” Vanessa replied. “Harold found him.”

The name immediately caught Richard’s attention.

Harold Pike had been his closest friend for decades and was a familiar figure in the family. Vanessa continued explaining that she and her husband, Grant, were already handling everything.

Then came another instruction.

“Don’t come to the house. We’re changing the locks this morning.”

Natalie’s stomach tightened.

Vanessa then revealed what appeared to be the real purpose of the call.

She claimed that she and Grant had discovered Richard’s estate documents and that everything—the house, truck, accounts, and other property—had been left to them.

Natalie, Vanessa said, had been excluded.

Grant then took the phone.

“You’re finally out of the family, Natalie.”

For a moment, Natalie said nothing.

Neither did Richard.

Then he slowly placed his coffee mug on the table.

“Vanessa.”

Silence filled the other end of the call.

Richard repeated himself.

“Vanessa, that’s interesting, because I don’t remember dying.”

The reaction was immediate.

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“This isn’t funny.”

“I agree,” Richard replied.

His voice had changed.

“Especially the part about dividing my property.”

Within seconds, Vanessa and Grant began stumbling over their explanation.

Richard, however, already seemed to understand what had happened.

“You found papers in my office, didn’t you?”

Silence.

“Those weren’t my final documents.”

Grant could be heard muttering in the background.

Richard had recently signed new legal documents.

And according to him, Natalie knew exactly where those documents were.

Before Vanessa could respond, another voice could suddenly be heard near her car.

“Mrs. Cole? We need to speak with you about documents you submitted this morning.”

Vanessa panicked.

“Grant, drive!”

The call ended.

Richard stared at Natalie’s phone for several seconds.

Then he picked up his coffee.

“Well,” he said quietly, “that went worse than expected.”

“For them?” Natalie asked.

Richard looked toward the window.

“For everybody.”

The Secret Richard Had Been Preparing to Reveal

Two days earlier, Richard had unexpectedly arrived at Natalie’s apartment carrying a small overnight bag and an old metal lockbox.

He had given her little explanation.

“Natalie, I made a mistake thirty-two years ago,” he told her. “And I need to fix it before Vanessa finds out.”

The following day, Richard and Natalie spent hours inside an attorney’s office signing trust amendments, property transfers, medical directives, and other estate documents.

At the time, Natalie believed her father was simply reorganizing his affairs.

After Vanessa’s phone call, however, Richard revealed something much more disturbing.

A forged power of attorney had apparently been used in an attempt to access his finances.

Weeks earlier, Richard had discovered that $78,000 was missing from one of his accounts.

The bank later contacted him to ask whether Vanessa had been authorized to act as his financial representative.

She had not.

Richard began quietly investigating.

What he discovered was alarming.

Grant reportedly had significant gambling debts, while Vanessa and Grant were struggling financially and had borrowed heavily against their own property.

The couple appeared to believe that Richard’s estate could solve their problems.....
