The lavish garden reception at Rosewood Estate in Newport, Rhode Island, was a display of extravagance. White orchids draped elegantly from archways, fairy lights twinkled overhead, and crystal glasses sparkled under the afternoon sun. For Valerie, however, the day was far from magical.
As she arrived, her sister Rachel’s voice sliced through the air. “You came here alone, broke, and with your useless daughter… did you really think anyone actually wanted to see you here?” Rachel’s smile lacked warmth, her words dripping with contempt.
Valerie, a divorced elementary school teacher, had stretched her budget to afford train tickets, a modest gift, and new shoes for her eight-year-old daughter, Chloe. The recording showed Theresa’s kitchen, captured from a hidden angle. Rachel appeared on screen, sipping wine while speaking to Arthur, the groom’s managing partner. “Are you seriously going through with the ceremony tomorrow?” Arthur asked. Rachel laughed. “Of course I am. Logan has the money, the corporate connections, and the family pedigree. Plus, he’s so consumed by his work that he never bothers to audit anything I spend.”
