What began as a simple texting mistake has grown into a heartwarming Thanksgiving tradition that has now lasted ten years.

In 2015, Arizona grandmother Wanda Dench attempted to text her grandson about Thanksgiving plans. Instead, she accidentally sent the message to a stranger — Jamal Hinton, then a high school student. Curious, Hinton asked Dench to confirm who she was by sending a photo. Upon realizing the mix-up, Dench assumed the conversation would end there.

It didn’t.

Hinton jokingly asked whether he could still join her for Thanksgiving dinner. Dench replied with a simple and welcoming answer: yes.

That unexpected exchange marked the beginning of an annual tradition. Since then, Dench and Hinton have celebrated Thanksgiving together every year, forming a bond that neither had planned but both deeply value.

In 2025, the pair are marking their 10th Thanksgiving together, a milestone that continues to capture attention online and inspire people around the world. Speaking with People, Dench reflected on their connection, saying she believes it was meant to be.

“I know it was fate,” Dench said. “I feel grateful and blessed every day because I never would have met someone as wonderful as Jamal otherwise.”

Hinton echoed the sentiment, noting how their story continues to resonate with others. “People get excited every year to see us together,” he said. “Knowing that our story brings happiness to others means everything.”

This year’s reunion holds added significance, as Dench and Hinton are partnering with Green Giant, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
