In a new post on his social platform, President Donald Trump reaffirmed his pledge to issue $2,000 payments to low‑ and middle‑income Americans, stating that the funding will come from what he calls the “massive” tariff revenue the federal government is now collecting. According to Trump, the government is generating substantial income from duties on imports from nearly all countries — revenue he says is sufficient to cover the payouts and still leave a surplus.
Trump added that any remaining funds — after distributing the payments — would go toward reducing the national debt, which currently stands at about $37 trillion. He emphasized that only “low‑ and middle‑income Americans” would qualify, excluding high‑earners from the benefit.
On Sunday, Trump reiterated the idea via social media: “A dividend of at least $2,000 a person will be paid to everyone,” he posted, again linking the proposal to his tariff‑strategy. He defended the tariffs by calling their critics “fools,” and claimed that the U.S. is now experiencing low inflation, a strong stock market, and record‑high 401(k) balances.
The President further argued that tariff income will enable the country not only to distribute dividends but also to begin paying down its debt while attracting record investments — noting, for example, that companies are opening new factories across the U.S. However, the plan remains legally uncertain: the Supreme Court of the United States has questioned whether the President has the constitutional authority to impose broad tariffs of this nature, with a ruling expected by the end of the year.
