Walmart announced a significant change to their stores that will impact millions of their customers on a daily basis

Shopping at Walmart will look a little different in the coming years.

The shop declared that they would be shifting away from traditional price tags and toward digital shelf labeling. It is expected to be a “game-changer” for both Walmart employees and customers.

Walmart revealed in early June that it has began testing the technology at one of its Grapevine, Texas, locations.

The pilot was so successful that the company announced just weeks later that the technology will be rolled out to 2,300 of its locations over the next two years.

Walmart associates walk the aisles every week to alter pricing on new items, rollbacks, and other markdowns, and the digital tag will allow them to change the prices of thousands of items in minutes using a mobile app.

Daniela Boscan, Food & Consumable Team Lead in Hurst, Texas, stated that digital shelf labels have “transformed” her everyday routine.

The technology has increased productivity while reducing “walking time”.

“With the new DSL system, a price adjustment that would have taken an associate two days to update now takes only minutes. This efficiency allows us to spend more time helping clients and less time doing monotonous operations.”

Digital shelf labels also make it easier to find things on a shelf, whether they need to be refilled or are part of an online order.

Of course, a new pricing scheme raises some concerns. Can Walmart utilize dynamic pricing?
