In a move sparking outrage from public health advocates, the Trump administration has ordered nearly $10 million worth of taxpayer-funded contraceptives—pills, IUDs, and implants—to be incinerated, rejecting offers from charities to distribute them at no cost. The decision will also cost taxpayers an additional $167,000 for the destruction process.
The stockpile, purchased by USAID and stored in Belgium, was intended for distribution in low-income countries, including Senegal, where shortages are now looming. According to health organizations, the supplies could have provided three years of contraception for thousands of women and girls.
