Bystanders, including a doctor who happened to be nearby, rushed to help. They managed to pull him from the ocean and began CPR immediately. Emergency responders from the Costa Rican Red Cross arrived shortly after and continued life-saving efforts using a defibrillator, but Warner was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial reports sparked confusion over whether Warner’s 8-year-old daughter had been in the water with him, but officials have since confirmed she remained safely on the beach during the incident.
An autopsy later confirmed Warner died of asphyxia caused by submersion—essentially drowning. There were no signs of foul play or intoxication, and authorities have ruled the death accidental.
Warner rose to fame in the 1980s as the beloved middle child on The Cosby Show, a performance that earned him an Emmy nomination. He went on to build a respected career in television, appearing in shows like Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and more recently The Resident. Off-screen, he was admired for his poetry, musical talent, and his thoughtful reflections on life and culture.
The entertainment world is mourning the sudden loss of a man remembered not only for his talent, but for his warmth, intellect, and quiet dignity. Warner is survived by his wife and daughter.
Fans and fellow actors have taken to social media to express their shock and heartbreak, many highlighting his impact both on-screen and in real life.
“He was more than Theo,” one friend wrote. “He was thoughtful, generous, deeply creative—and above all, a loving father.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
