My phone rang just after noon. The moment I heard Jonathan’s voice, my stomach twisted. “Mommy,” he whispered, so softly I almost missed it, “there’s a lady in the living room… she says she’s my real mom.”
The world blurred. I gripped my desk, my voice trembling as I asked, “Where’s Dad?”
“He’s here… but he won’t answer me,” Jonathan whispered. “I’m in the bathroom.”
That was all it took. I didn’t shut down my computer. I didn’t say goodbye. I ran.
The drive home felt endless, every second stretching into eternity. My mind raced through explanations—Maybe Jonathan misunderstood. Maybe Leo brought someone over as a joke. But the fear in my son’s voice told me this was no mistake.
I called Leo repeatedly. Straight to voicemail every time.
By the time I turned onto our street, my hands were shaking. I didn’t know what I was about to walk into, but I knew one thing: I wasn’t ready for it.
The house was silent when I pushed the door open.
