Sarah, 12 weeks pregnant, settled into an armchair, hands instinctively resting on her growing belly. Michael sat beside her, offering silent support.
Across the room, Sarah’s younger sister, Erica, lounged on the sofa, her demeanor one of entitlement. At 26, Erica still relied entirely on their parents, who watched over her with unwavering protectiveness.
The Announcement That Changed Everything
“We have big news,” Sarah said, her voice trembling with excitement. “We’re having a baby.”
Michael’s smile widened, but the room’s reaction was far from celebratory. Sarah’s mother’s smile faded quickly, and her father’s frown deepened. “Twelve weeks? And you’re just telling us now?” he demanded. “Don’t you think family deserves to know first?”
Erica’s response was immediate and cruel. “It doesn’t look like much. You’re barely showing. Are you sure it’s even alive?” she sneered, stepping closer to jab a finger into Sarah’s stomach. “Just looks like you’ve been eating too much pasta, Sarah.”
Michael’s patience snapped. “Hey! Don’t talk to her like that. And don’t touch her.”
Erica recoiled, turning to their parents with tears in her eyes. “I was just playing! God, he’s so aggressive. Why is he always yelling at me?”
Sarah’s father sighed, as if Michael were the one at fault. “Michael, please. Erica is just excited. There’s no need to raise your voice in this house.”

The situation spiraled out of control when Erica leaned in, whispering, “I bet it’s not even real. I bet if I really tried, I could make it quiet.” Before anyone could react, she kicked Sarah’s pregnant belly with terrifying force.

Sarah drifted in and out of consciousness, hearing distant voices. Her father’s sneer cut through the haze. “Get up, Sarah. Stop ruining the evening. Or I’ll just have Erica kick you again to wake you up.”
A rough shove to her ribs jolted her awake. Then, Michael’s voice, filled with rage, shattered the room. “GET AWAY FROM HER!”
He knelt beside Sarah, checking her pulse and gently resting a hand on her stomach. His voice was a whisper, but it carried a threat that silenced everyone. “If you say one more word… I will rip your throats out with my bare teeth.”

The ambulance ride to the hospital was a blur. Doctors rushed Sarah into an examination room, where an emergency ultrasound revealed the unthinkable. Dr. Martinez lowered the ultrasound probe, her eyes filled with tears. “Sarah… I’m so sorry. The trauma caused a massive placental abruption. There is no heartbeat.”
Sarah’s scream echoed through the room. Michael collapsed into a chair, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs. Hours later, after surgery and countless conversations with doctors, they stepped into the hallway to face Sarah’s family.
Her father stood, irritation evident. “Well? Is the drama over? Can we go home now?”....
