‘Outdated, punishing rules’ – Mom fights for son, 8, to keep his long hair despite schools rejecting him

School rules often clash with students’ desire to express themselves. This conflict is evident in the case of 8-year-old Farouk James from London, whose long hair has led to rejection from several schools.

Farouk, a child model with a stunning head of hair, has faced numerous school rejections due to his hair length. His mother, Bonnie Miller, noted that “forcing children to cut their hair is against their human rights.”

Bonnie explained the cultural significance of Farouk’s hair, stating, “Farouk’s father is from Ghana and for cultural reasons, we didn’t cut his hair until he was 3 years old.”

To fight against such discrimination, Bonnie started a Change.org petition and formed the “Mane Generation” team. She aims to change outdated and punishing rules globally, not just in the U.K.

Despite support online, the family still faces negative comments. Bonnie emphasized, “Farouk’s hair is a God-given part of him and he will not be cutting it to appease anyone.”
