When it comes to choosing eggs, the health and care of the hen make all the difference. Eggs from well-fed, humanely raised hens don’t just taste better—they’re often more nutritious and visually appealing, too.

One of the first things to look for is the color of the yolk. A vibrant orange or deep golden yolk is a strong sign that the hen enjoyed a diet rich in natural carotenoids—nutrients found in grasses, insects, flowers, and other foraged foods. These richer yolks often carry higher levels of vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, reflecting the superior health of the hen.
