The question stung. Less than 24 hours earlier, a delivery truck had collided with her car, leaving her with life-threatening injuries. Doctors weren’t certain she would survive the night. Yet her family chose to celebrate Lauren’s move into her new suburban home instead.
The Unanswered Calls
While Miranda lay in intensive care recovering from emergency surgery, her parents spent the afternoon helping Lauren decorate her new house. Photos and videos posted online showed them carrying lamps, arranging throw pillows, and smiling for the camera.
“Couldn’t have done today without Mom and Dad!” Lauren declared in one video. Behind her, their father carried a lamp while their mother carefully arranged living room decor.
Miranda’s nurse, Marisol, had personally called the family that morning. She left urgent messages explaining Miranda’s critical condition and requesting immediate presence. The calls went unanswered.

At 6:40 PM, Miranda pressed her call button. When Nurse Marisol arrived, she made an unusual request: “Please call the number saved as ‘Harding & Vance — Estate.'”
Estate attorney Julian Vance arrived shortly after 8 PM. He had handled Miranda’s legal affairs since she sold her medical software company two years prior. Her parents knew of her success but never realized the extent of her wealth—or that they remained beneficiaries in her estate plan.
“Miranda,” Julian said gently, “you don’t have to do this tonight.”
“Yes,” she replied. “I do.”

Miranda signed revised estate documents that evening. The changes were comprehensive:

- Lake house ownership transferred

Miranda’s parents arrived at 10 PM, carrying takeout coffee as if delayed by traffic rather than choice. Lauren followed, watching with detached curiosity.
“Miranda, you scared us,” her mother said.
