Doctoral Candidate Defends Dissertation After Violent Sabotage
A Night of Betrayal Before the Defense
The evening before her doctoral dissertation defense, Selena Carter faced a brutal confrontation in her Madison apartment. Her husband, Hunter, and his mother, Barbara, attempted to prevent her from presenting her research the following day.
According to Selena, Hunter declared, “If you stand before those examiners tomorrow, you can forget that you are still my wife.” The statement came after months of escalating tension over her academic pursuits.
The Attack
Selena described walking into her kitchen to find Hunter and Barbara speaking in hushed tones. Barbara, who had arrived from Ohio uninvited, had repeatedly criticized Selena’s decision to pursue higher education, insisting that a married woman belonged at home.
“You are not going to that defense tomorrow,” Barbara told her. “It is finally time to stop embarrassing this entire family with your ridiculous academic obsession.”
When Selena refused to back down, Hunter physically restrained her while Barbara used kitchen scissors to cut off chunks of her hair. “Let us see if this helps you understand your place in this house,” Barbara whispered as Selena struggled.
Escape and Determination
After the attack, Selena fled the apartment, checked into a motel, and trimmed her hair as neatly as possible. The next morning, she arrived on campus wearing a borrowed scarf to cover the damage.
“I only knew I would never allow them to decide my future,” she said.

As Selena prepared to present her dissertation, she noticed an unexpected figure in the audience—her father, Carson, with whom she had not spoken in three years. He stood, followed by the entire examination committee, faculty, and students, in a show of solidarity.
“They stood because they respected the work I had spent years building,” Selena recalled.
Unanimous Approval
Despite her emotional state, Selena delivered her presentation with confidence. After nearly two hours of rigorous questioning, the committee unanimously awarded her the doctorate.
“We are pleased to award you your doctorate. Congratulations, Doctor Carter,” announced Professor Samira, a member of the examination panel.....
