When the first sound cut through the haze of pain, it wasn’t relief or concern—it was irritation. The voice belonged to Tessa, her words sharp as she dismissed the severity of the car crash that had left her sister battered, bruised, and barely conscious in a hospital bed.
“She does this,” Tessa said, her tone laced with frustration. “She always makes everything bigger than it is.”
The survivor, whose identity remains protected, struggled to open her eyes. Her ribs burned with every breath, her left arm was immobilized in a sling, and one leg was encased in a rigid brace. The last memory before darkness was twisted metal, a spinning car, and a stranger’s shout that help was coming.
