Put a Balloon Over Your Shower Drain — The Result Will Surprise You

Posted on 11 February 2026 By tony

Keeping cockroaches out of the bathroom can be frustrating, especially when they appear from the shower drain. These pests are attracted to warmth and moisture, making bathroom pipes an easy entry point even in clean homes. One simple, low-effort method people try involves using a common household item—a balloon—to make drains less accessible. Cockroaches can travel through plumbing by slipping through small gaps, and damp, open drains are a frequent pathway.

The balloon method works by slightly narrowing these openings, making it harder for insects to crawl through without blocking water flow. To try it, remove the drain cover and cut both ends off a standard balloon, leaving a stretchy ring. Fit this ring around the underside or edge of the drain cover so it forms a snug seal when replaced. The idea is to reduce gaps, not completely seal the drain.

Check it regularly to ensure it doesn’t trap debris or slow drainage. If water begins pooling, adjust or remove it immediately. For best results, combine this trick with basic prevention. Keep the bathroom as dry as possible, wipe wet surfaces, and clean drains regularly.

Also check for cracks or gaps around pipes and seal them, since pests often enter from hidden spaces behind walls or floors. Pest control usually requires layered solutions. Small, consistent steps—like the balloon method and proper cleaning—can help reduce unwanted visitors and keep your bathroom cleaner without harsh chemicals or complicated fixes.
