Do You Remember Her? Here’s How Phoebe Cates Looks Today

Posted on 10 January 2026 By tony

Phoebe Cates remains one of the most recognizable faces of 1980s cinema, remembered for her roles in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and the Gremlins films, where she portrayed the character Kate Beringer. For a generation of moviegoers, her performances became part of pop culture history. Over a 12-year period, she appeared in 16 films before stepping away from Hollywood in the mid-1990s.

Born in New York City on July 16, 1963, Cates grew up in a family closely connected to the arts. She studied at elite institutions, including Juilliard, and initially trained as a ballet dancer. A serious knee injury ended her dance ambitions, leading her into modeling at a young age. Although successful, she later said the profession did not suit her, and she soon turned her focus to acting.

Her screen debut came in Paradise (1982), but her breakthrough arrived with Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a coming-of-age film that would later be added to the U.S. National Film Registry. She went on to star in popular titles such as Gremlins, Gremlins 2, Private School, Date with an Angel, Drop Dead Fred, and Princess Caraboo, one of her final leading roles. While some of her later films did not achieve major box-office success, Drop Dead Fred eventually developed a loyal cult following.

Cates has often spoken about her preference for theater, noting that stage work offered more meaningful and diverse opportunities for women than film roles at the time.

In 1989, she married actor Kevin Kline, and the couple later welcomed two children. Choosing to prioritize family life, Cates gradually withdrew from acting. In 2005, she opened a boutique in New York City called Blue Tree, which she continues to run.

Now in her early 60s, Phoebe Cates lives a largely private life, making only occasional public appearances. Her journey reflects a deliberate shift from Hollywood fame to a quieter path centered on family, creativity, and personal balance.
