Community Rallies to Raise Over $1 Million for 88-Year-Old Veteran After Pension Loss

Posted on 4 January 2026 By tony

An 88-year-old army veteran, Ed Bambas, who has continued working at a supermarket for years after losing his pension, will finally be able to retire thanks to a viral fundraising campaign that raised over $1.5 million.

Bambas lost his pension in 2012 when his former employer went bankrupt. Around the same time, his wife fell seriously ill, forcing him to sell their home to cover her care, which also led to the loss of his health insurance. Since her passing seven years ago, Bambas has been working five eight-hour shifts a week at a store 45 miles west of Detroit, struggling to make ends meet.

His story came to light when influencer Samuel Weidenhofer, accompanied by local influencer Mike McKinstry, visited the supermarket to meet Bambas. Weidenhofer captured an emotional encounter on video, where Bambas shared his challenges. He received a $400 tip that day, and a GoFundMe campaign was launched in his support.

Within days, donations surged past $1.5 million, including a $10,000 contribution from a single donor. Bambas, who has never used social media and still owns a flip phone, spoke to WXYZ about the overwhelming support, tearfully reflecting on his late wife.

“I try to visit her grave every day. It helps me get through,” Bambas said. Weidenhofer said his goal was simple: “I just wanted to give him a chance to retire and have some comfort… I didn’t expect this much support; it’s record-breaking.”

The response has resonated widely, inspiring hope and gratitude in a story that highlights both hardship and the generosity of the community.
