Understanding Why Oven Doors Break — and Ways to Prevent Future Damage

Willie Mae Truesdale was shocked when a loud explosion erupted from her kitchen. Her oven door had shattered into thousands of pieces — even though it wasn’t on. “Glass everywhere,” she said. “I just thought, what in the world happened?” She’s not alone. During COVID lockdowns, Cheryl, a suburban mom, faced the same nightmare. Her three-month-old Bosch oven exploded during a self-cleaning cycle, scattering glass inside the appliance. Truesdale’s was a Frigidaire — proof that the problem spans brands. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recorded more than 450 similar complaints since 2019.

Why It Happens
Glass expert Mark Meshulam explains that most modern ovens use tempered soda-lime glass, which is less heat-resistant than older borosilicate glass once used in Pyrex. As ovens heat and cool, the weaker glass is more prone to stress fractures. Another culprit? Nickel sulfide inclusions — microscopic flaws invisible to the eye. Over time, these tiny imperfections can expand under heat, causing the glass to explode suddenly, especially during self-cleaning cycles.....
